Nestlé Healthy Kids Global Programme
Healthy Kids is a global programme of 'Creating Shared Values', which focuses on improving basic knowledge of nutrition and physical activity levels in children, around the world. Nestlé intends to implement 'Healthy Kids' programmes in all countries where it operates directly, by the end of 2011.
These programs are designed and implemented in collaboration with national health authorities, child nutrition experts, NGOs and educational authorities. The global program is aimed at improving the nutritional status of school children aged 6 - 16 years old and includes both nutrition education and physical activity programs at the national level.
In 1999, Nestlé Australia developed in partnership with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), the "Get the AIS in your Classroom" resource. It has the common goal of helping Australian families get active and healthy.
The Australian Institute of Sport's commitment to physical education
As Australians, we have always thought of ourselves as a great sporting nation. So it came as a surprise when we performed poorly at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) was born of the need to do something about this - we had to find a way to support and develop our future world champion athletes in a way that would really make a difference.
Now more than 30 years on, how things have changed!
Australia is back among the top sporting nations of the world, following another hugely successful Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. At the London Olympic Games we finished tenth in the medal tally with a total of 35 medals. At the London Paralympic Games we finished fifth in the medal tally with a total of 85 medals.
The AIS has played a big part in developing winning athletes who are strong in mind and body. Anyone who visits the AIS in Canberra will be struck by the way in which its programs for athletes go way beyond the development of fitness and sporting abilities. It's all about developing well-rounded athletes, those who will be physically and mentally equipped to take on life's challenges, both in and out of the sporting arena.
The benefits of this 'holistic' approach hold true for everyone, not just those at the top of their sport. And through the Get the AIS into your Classroom resource, teachers have the chance to draw on 30 years of AIS experience in developing the keys to a well-balanced lifestyle and communicate these to their students in fun and innovative ways.
The school classroom is an ideal setting to explore lifestyle choices and develop self-reliance in a rapidly changing world. This collection of free teacher resources has been developed to empower children with the knowledge and understanding, skills, values and attitudes that will enable them to lead a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
